A brief
address by a non-Muslim congress member about a very controversial
topic in the Muslim world: political participation. After first
looking at the founding fathers of America and the idea of religion,
Congressman Jim Leach makes known to the Iowa audience his concern
for the assimilation of Muslims
in America. He concludes by referring the audience to historical
speeches made by Winston Churchill and Thomas Jefferson about
how divisions in the world can be accomidated and how this applies
to Muslims and their current situation here in America.
Other topics discussed: the distinction
between governments and people in terms of foreign policy and
sanctions, the "clashing" of civilizations?, the misunderstanding
of Islam from within the government, the money issue in politics
and how to reach out for support from politicians.
