"And therefore,
my dear brothers and sisters, every action I commit, or omit;
every word I utter or harbor; every thought I conceal or express;
I must always ask myself, does it or does it not fulfill the
criteria of [worship] to Allah?"

born, we were born to die. Can anyone challenge this truth? I
was brought into this world in order to go on a journey back
home. And I want to go back home for home is [Paradise]."
"We take showers
everyday - in this country, masha' Allah, a shower every morning
and a shower every evening, because we have plenty of water!...
Yet often times we do not take a morning spiritual shower, a
'nafs' shower to cleanse [the lower self] every morning and every
evening. No, we don't do that everyday. Many of us don't do it
every week. Many of us don't do it every year. Many of us have
not yet taken a 'nafs' shower, or spiritual shower, for years
and forgive me, we stink."

The first session of a four-part
series called "Islamic Psychology of the Self" introduces
the science of purifying the self. Paying special attention to
the fact that "the day we were born, we were born to die",
