The sacred task of assuming the
leadership of the ummah falls to our Muslim youth. In a small
gathering at a South Florida masjid, Abdullah Hakim Quick engages
the youth in an informal discussion group meant to prepare them
for the obstacles inherent in this task. After surveying the
landscape of the Muslim community in the West and discussing
the crisis on virtually every front, Imam Quick encourages these
future leaders to learn from the mistakes of those who came before them and to apply the teachings
of Islam in a practical, balanced manner. He warns that in order
to be successful with leadership, one must have knowledge of
both the deen and the dunya. This workshop is ideal for youth
struggling with their identity, direction and faith. Although
geared towards a younger audience, it is also appropriate for
parents, mentors and imams who need to understand the challenges
and concerns of
the youth. Other topics discussed: communism vs. capitalism,
the effects of colonialism, youth clashing with elders, wearing
hijab, dealing with Islamophobia, helping fellow Muslims who
are straying, dealing with the gay culture, dealing with temptations,
fornication, being involved in non-Muslim politics, how youth
can contribute in the Muslim community, youth studying Islam,
learning Arabic, brotherhood, giving advice, and self-defense.
