Two respected
imams from the Miami area tackle the profound subject of applying
Islam today through the proper understanding of the Qur'an and
Sunnah. Each speaker introduces the topic by making an individual
presentation. Abdul Hamed Samra begins by talking about the distinctive
aspects in understanding the basic beliefs and practices of Islam
versus the understanding of matters related to daily life and
how these are determined by context. Shafayat Mohamed's approach
is a bit more critical as he addresses the problems of ignorance
in matters of fiqh, secular politics versus Islamic jurisprudence,
and blind acceptance of the medhabs. Following the speakers'
presentations is an open Q&A discussion in which the audience
is given the opportunity to ask questions about relevant fiqh
issues today. Among some of the many issues discussed: sighting
of the new moon for Ramadan and Eid, the essence of Allah, contraception,
and men and women mixing in the workplace. |

"During the time of the Prophet (S) there was no need for what is called 'fiqh', because the reference is there." -Abdul Hamed Samra "The combination of the knowledge of the universe, the community, and the [hereafter] opens the intellect of a person to be able to understand the issues of today." -Shafayat Mohamed "If Muslims want to live a religious life in this world and do not accept technology and science, we are going to be blind Muslims. Similarly, if scientists want to accept science without religion, they are going to be lame in their understanding." -Shafayat Mohamed |
