In this important
address at the 33rd Annual ISNA Convention in Ohio, Imam Jamil
Al-Amin presents a practical program of training for the Muslim
that is intended to motivate one to action and cause the spiritual
self to become active in a healthy way. In doing this, he looks
at the modern-day crisis of secular rule to raise awareness of
just how and why things have gone wrong in the Muslim world and
the world in general. He analyzes the concept of freedom versus
worship and explains how being a Muslim is a great favor that
Allah has conferred upon us. He also provides an interesting
commentary on the democratic system of the West and how Muslims
should view this system in light of our circumstances. |

"Freedom is not a state that is attainable because Allah (SWT) has created man to worship Him. He has made you a servant or slave of Allah. So the whole concept of freedom as it is passed down to us... is not an objective, it is not a realism. You cannot be free enough not to die, you cannot be free enough not to breathe, you cannot be free enough not to eat food... And that in being slaves to Allah, it is not a thing that demeans or puts us down but it raises us." "The intellect can be developed to a point where it becomes an enemy to the spiritual self. The kind of knowledge that has been supplied to the mind makes the mind think that it is superior in dealing with the spirit." "There is a premium put upon certain things that are anti-Islam. For example, the intellect has been trained to do things in haste... but the Prophet (P) says, 'patience comes from Allah, haste comes from Shaitan.' In a society that has made a virtue out of impatience, how do you train yourself to be patient?... Everything that we are being trained to do deals with impatience- fast food, instant oatmeal, instant coffee, instant T.V., surrogate mothers- do it right now." "Western democracy, as it is advocated, and implemented, and practiced, is an enemy to Islam. Anytime you devise a system that separates the remembrance of Allah from the responsibility of secular duty, when you separate church and state- you're wrong. So we have to be on guard as to our dealing and participation with this." "The mission of the Muslim is different from secular responsibility, secular rule. It does not emanate from secular rule... [Allah] has given you this deen and it will dominate!- not accommodate, not associate, not integrate, not affiliate!" |
